The signs your roof is nearing the end
- Granules in your eavestroughs: If you see a heavy buildup of sand-like granules, your shingles are losing their protective coating and are reaching the end of their service life.
- Buckling or curling: This is often a sign of old age or improper attic ventilation causing the shingles to overheat and deform.
- Persistent moss or algae: While common on the north side of roofs in our humid summers, heavy growth can trap moisture against the shingle, accelerating decay.
The Bottom Line: If your shingles are only 10 years old and have minor, isolated damage, a professional patch is often the best path. However, if the substrate (the wood decking) is compromised or the shingles are over 20 years old, a replacement is the only responsible long-term choice.
